Cette étude se propose d'aborder l'espace urbain comme une construction impensée de l'activité humaine. Les pratiques et les représentations des acteurs qui s'impliquent dans la ville de Tours (les chanoines de Saint-Martin, les moines de Saint-Julien et de Marmoutier, les rois, les archevêques, les comtes ...) sont examinées tout d'abord pour elles-mêmes, comme une série de moments particuliers, liés à chaque fois à des finalités spécifiques et très diverses - et en général non urbaines. Puis, elles sont mises en relation avec les caractéristiques de l'espace urbain, c'est-à-dire le parcellaire et le réseau viaire précisément décrits grâce à un système d'information géographique, en montrant qu'elles participent à structurer cet espace urbain de manière dialectique, et non causale ou immédiate. Les temporalités propres à l'activité sociale, qui ne sont pas les mêmes que celles de la structuration de l'espace urbain, interagissent néanmoins en permanence avec celles de la ville. C'est ce jeu de décalage entre des temporalités aux rythmes différents qui permet d'expliquer la morphogenèse de la ville.

Ein Kulturhistoriker des 19. Jahrhunderts, Jacob Burckhardt, und ein Städteforscher des 20. Jahrhunderts, Henri Lefebvre, versuchen den rasanten Wandel der Städte zu verstehen. Der Ältere hat sich noch an der Buntheit der europäischen historischen Stadt erfreut, sich dann den grossen europäischen Stadtkulturen zugewandt, dem Florenz der Renaissance und der antiken Polis. Der Jüngere kommt aus einem Dorf in den Pyrenäen nach Paris und trifft dort auf eine chaotische periphere Stadtlandschaft. Die Wiege des Reichtums, die historische Stadt, ist aufgesprengt; im heutigen abstrakten Urbanraum einer Global City dominieren die Banken, Geschäftszentren, Flughäfen, Informations- und Entscheidungszentren. Der Prozess der masslosen Urbanisierung, der Verwüstung des Raumes, verlangt nach einer Theorie des Raumes. Der Kontrast zwischen der kulturhistorischen Sichtweise und einer modernen Theoriebildung ist stimulierend.

This book contains articles on historic cities of the Islamic world, ranging from West Africa to Malaysia, which over the centuries have been centres of culture and learning and of economic and commercial life, and which have contributed much to the consolidation of Islam as a faith and as a social and political institution. The articles have been taken from the second edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, completed in 2004, but in many cases expanded and rewritten. All have been updated to include fresh historical information, with note of contemporary social developments and population statistics. The book thus delineates the urban background of Islam has it has evolved up to the present day, highlighting the role of such great cities as Cairo, Istanbul, Baghdad and Delhi in Islamic history, and also brings them together in a rich panorama illustrating one of mankind's greatest achievements, the living organism of the city.
